N. Scott Stevens-Professional History
2007-Present
Production Manager and Senior Optician at ER Precision Optical of Orlando, Florida. Oversight of manufacturing processes in the fabrication of spherical and plano optics in a wide range of materials using conventional shaping, grinding and polishing approaches. This includes all process engineering, writing, implementation and hands-on refinement on a shop-wide basis. ER specializes in military subcontracting of infra-red optics and assemblies. Materials include silicon, germanium, Cleartran, Zinc Selenide, Zinc Sulfide, Calcium Flouride and a broad range of glasses. The company utilizes Continuous Polishers and Conventional Spindles to finish optics to state of the art specifications. My extensive background polishing strategies and machine design resulted in ER’s Polishing capabilities expanding considerably. The company presently operates two 30”, two 48”, one 72” CP’s along with 20 high speed and 20 high precision (finishing) spindles. Each platform is dedicated specialized material requirements. My responsibilities include working directly with customers in process development and engineering test procedures to satisfy end user requirements. I have extensive metrology experience that includes but is not limited to the use of Zygo Interferometers, Profilometers, Microscopes and manual and electronic gaging operating at state of the art levels. Recent contributions include the design of high precision prism fixturing techniques enabling mass production (as opposed single element fabrication) of Silicon Penta-prisms to angular tolerances of better than 15” while maintaining surface and figure integrity throughout the process and engineering a detailed Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP) qualifying ER Precision as a supplier to a primary contractor of Silicon Windows for a high profile, long-term military project. A more detailed account of present and past accomplishments is available on request.
2004-2007
Shift supervisor with Research Electro-Optics Inc. of Boulder, Colorado. Duties included shop-wide supervision of personnel and fabrication processes during a time of rapid expansion; Technical oversight of Continuous Polishing operations including R&D functions in IR crystals and sub-angstrom super-polishing; Coordinate process development efforts between theoretical scientists, engineers and optical technicians from rough fabrication through final testing. Oversight of CP expansion program that includes the retro-fitting and re-design of CP machinery to perform at state-of-the art levels. Responsibilities also include working directly with mechanical engineering and upper management staff to customize hardware geared to efficient production of plano optics to meet the requirements of the National Laboratory System for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Program; training and team development to facilitate all of the above.
1990-2004
Master optician and technical coordinator of Continuous Polishing operations and metrology; night shift General Manager at Bond Optics LLC of Lebanon, New Hampshire. Responsibilities included hands on fabrication, team and process development, and interferometric testing of a wide array of optical components in a variety of configurations and materials. During my term of employment Bond Optics became a leading competitor in the high precision, plano optics components market and custom-built four large Continuous Polishers.
1985-1990
Second and third shift supervisor at Zygo Inc. of Middlefield, Connecticut. Responsibilities included technical supervision of large plano optical area including team and process development. Hands on production and testing of optical flats, windows and mirrors in varying sizes and configurations to 1000mm.
1983-1985
Polishing, grinding and shaping with Laser Optics Inc, of Bethel, Connecticut. Materials included, but were not limited to Zinc Selenide, Gallium Arsenide, Silicon, Calcium Fluoride and Germanium.
1981-1983
Polishing and grinding of spherical mirrors and objective windows for Schmidt Cassegrain Telescopes with Bausch & Lomb (Criterion Division) of West Hartford, Connecticut.
